TERMINOLOGY — canonical slugs (John D. Rockefeller)

Notes on flattening

  • cooperation-over-competition is not a defence of monopoly-for-its-own-sake.
    For Rockefeller combination is «the same thing» as cooperation on a larger
    scale — a way to end ruinous competition and waste, «no more of an argument
    against combinations than the fact that steam may explode is an argument
    against steam». The KB records his stated creed; whether Standard Oil's real
    tactics matched it is the Tarbell debate (see see-also.md), not this slug.
  • giving-as-a-science is «the best philanthropy, the help that does the most
    good and the least harm» — study before the cheque, «his money is a feeble
    offering without the study behind it». It is the opposite of Sunday-only
    almsgiving and of pure emotional charity.
  • duty-of-wealth rests on «if a man has succeeded, he has brought upon
    himself corresponding responsibilities» and «the men who not only know how to
    make money, but who accept the great responsibility of administering it
    wisely» — a duty frame, not a happiness frame («the possession of money in
    great abundance» does not «necessarily bring happiness»).
  • against-get-rich-quick is his nightly self-talk («go steady») and «the man
    who starts out simply with the idea of getting rich won't succeed» — a warning
    against the short road, not a hustle slogan.
